Jagannath Temple: The Abode of the Lord of Odisha

Odisha, known as the land of Lord Jagannath (the Lord of the Universe), is home to the magnificent Jagannath Temple in Puri. The temple is constructed in the 12th century AD, this temple has been the epicenter of the Jagannath cult, drawing pilgrims from all corners of the world year-round.
Architectural Brilliance and Mysticism
The spiritual allure of Lord Jagannath often overshadows the architectural marvel of the temple. Built on a raised platform, the temple is an imposing structure that continued to see additions until the 16th century AD. Unlike other temples in the region, the carvings predominantly feature gods and goddesses. The entire temple complex is enclosed within two concentric walls: the Kuruma Bheda (Inner Wall) and the Meghanada Pachira (Outer Wall). The main entrance, Singhadwara, is located on the eastern front, with three additional entrances in the four cardinal directions. These entrances, not being architecturally aligned, suggest they were created for security purposes during the turbulent period between the 16th and 18th centuries.

Architectural Feats of the Temple
- Shadowless Structure: The main temple is constructed so that no shadow of the temple falls on the ground at any time of the day.
- Nilachakra: The Blue Wheel perched on top of the temple, made of eight metals (asta dhatu), is believed to be as sacred as the Lord himself.
- Patitapabana Flag: The temple flag flows in the opposite direction of the wind and is changed daily at sunset. A family appointed by the King has performed this ritual for over 800 years, climbing 165 meters barefoot without support.
- Mahaprasad Preparation: The offering to the Lord is prepared on fire lit by wood charcoal. Rice, vegetables, and cereals are placed in earthen pots and cooked one on top of the other, with the top pot cooking first.
- Aruna Stambha: The 33-ft monolith pillar in front of the Singhadwara was originally located at the Sun Temple in Konark.
- Unique Idols: The idols of the holy trinity are carved out of wood, unlike the stone or metal idols commonly seen. They are also the only deities with the trappings of mortality.
